Robert Oppenheimer\u2019s grandson is among the star-studded signatories of a new open letter about the dangers artificial intelligence poses to the planet.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, which was issued by the <a href=\"https:\/\/theelders.org\/news\/elders-and-future-life-institute-release-open-letter-calling-long-view-leadership-existential\" class=\"\">Nelson Mandela-founded group The Elders<\/a> in conjunction with the <a href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/long-view-leadership-on-existential-threats\/\" class=\"\">Future of Life Institute<\/a>, calls on global decisionmakers to \u201cshow long-view leadership on existential threats,\u201d including \u201cungoverned AI\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/congress-alarmed-russia-space-based-nuclear-weapon\" class=\"\">nuclear weapons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Oppenheimer, who <a href=\"https:\/\/oppenheimerproject.org\/\" class=\"\">founded the Oppenheimer Project<\/a> to continue his grandfather\u2019s mission of tempering scientific progress with \u201cinternational cooperation and unity,\u201d was joined by hundreds of others, including British billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/richard-branson-tourists-high-definitely-not-space\" class=\"\">Richard Branson<\/a>, AI pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/godfather-ai-quits-google\" class=\"\">Geoffrey Hinton<\/a>, writer and Carl Sagan widow <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-human-family-in-crisis\" class=\"\">Ann Druyan<\/a>, and musician Peter Gabriel.
