When the researchers prevented the free radicals from reacting with cysteine, the tardigrades couldn\u2019t enter tun, meaning the cysteine is likely a key to all tardigrades\u2019 survival strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Study co-author Leslie Hicks told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2412569-we-finally-know-how-tardigrades-can-survive-extreme-conditions\/\" title=\"New Scientist\" rel=\"dofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\"><em>New Scientist<\/em><\/a> that, \u201cCysteine acts like a kind of regulatory sensor.
