Now, just a few days later, Panasonic has one-upped them by announcing a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.panasonic.co.uk\/pressreleases\/panasonic-debuts-high-powered-photovoltaic-module-hit-r-n330-for-uk-and-european-markets-sets-new-module-efficiency-record-1229674\">rooftop panel prototype<\/a> that\u2019s nearly half a percent more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry Elon, I\u2019mma let you finish\u2026\u201d and, well, you know how that pun goes. What\u2019s cool about Panasonic\u2019s record-breaking prototype is that it was mass-produced, and able to convert 22.5 percent of sunlight into electrical energy straight off the production line, which means it\u2019ll be easily commercialised and presumably relatively cheap for consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Right about now you\u2019re probably wondering why this is a big deal, when researchers have already managed to convert the Sun\u2019s rays into electricity with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/australian-researchers-have-converted-sunlight-into-electricity-with-more-than-40-efficiency\">more than 40 percent efficiency<\/a>, and just last year Panasonic themselves announced they\u2019d made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/panasonic-hit-solar-cell-256-efficiency\/31573\/\">a solar cell with 25.6 percent efficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/panasonic-has-produced-the-world-s-most-efficient-rooftop-solar-panel-with-22-5-module-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of last week, solar technology company SolarCity, which was co-founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, made headlines when it announced it had developed the most efficient rooftop solar panel to date, with a module-level efficiency of 22.04 percent.
