That means the patients\u2019 behavior or environment has caused changes that affect the way their genes work.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these altered <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/immune+genes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">immune genes<\/a> are the same ones that increase an individual\u2019s risk for Alzheimer\u2019s. Northwestern scientists theorize the cause could be a previous viral infection, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/environmental+pollutants\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">environmental pollutants<\/a> or other lifestyle factors and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is possible that these findings implicate the peripheral immune response in Alzheimer\u2019s disease risk,\u201d said lead investigator David Gate, assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. \u201cWe haven\u2019t yet untangled whether these changes are reflective of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/brain+pathology\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brain pathology<\/a> or whether they precipitate the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new Northwestern Medicine study has found the immune system in the blood of Alzheimer\u2019s patients is epigenetically altered.
