In their project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41477-023-01595-7\">reported<\/a> in the journal <i><i>Nature Plants<\/i>,<\/i> the group engineered a moss that is one of the first living things to have multiple cells carrying a partially artificial chromosome.<\/p>\n<p>Several research projects have been working toward the goal of creating plants with synthetic <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/genes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">genes <\/a>\u2014such plants could be programmed to produce more food, for example, or more oxygen, or to pull more <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/carbon+dioxide\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">carbon dioxide<\/a> from the air. Last year, one team of researchers developed a way to program up to half of the genome of yeast cells using synthetic genes.<\/p>\n<p>In this new effort, the team in China upped the ante by replacing natural <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/moss\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">moss<\/a> genes with genes created in a lab\u2014moss is far more genetically complex than yeast.
