While Io was explored in depth with NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/galileo\/\">Galileo spacecraft<\/a> during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Io hasn\u2019t been imaged up close since then. But NASA\u2019s Juno spacecraft <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/get-involved\/citizen-science\/for-your-processing-pleasure-the-sharpest-pictures-of-jupiters-volcanic-moon-io-in-a-generation\/\">recently broke this dry spell<\/a> when it passed within 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) of Io\u2019s surface on December 30, 2023, capturing stunning images of active volcanic plumes and several lava fields.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image of Jupiter\u2019s moon Io, obtained by NASA\u2019s Juno spacecraft on Dec 30, 2023, with its night side being illuminated by reflected sunlight bouncing off Jupiter, also called \u201cJupitershine.\u201d (Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/SwRI\/MSSS Image processing by Emma W\u00e4lim\u00e4ki \u00a9 CC BY)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While this encounter was less than 1,000 miles from Io\u2019s surface, Juno <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap231023.html\">previously snapped images<\/a> of Io in October 2023, though at just over 7,000 miles (11,000 kilometers).
