Understanding the behavior of iron under extreme conditions, such as ultra-high pressures and temperatures, has implications for the science of geology and the Earth\u2019s evolution.<\/p>\n<p>In a study conducted by a team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/contenthub.llnl.gov\/www.llnl.gov\">Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory<\/a>. researchers combined lasers and X-ray diffraction methods to examine how different crystal structures of iron are related to each other and what happens when it melts at ultrahigh pressures and temperatures. The <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prb\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevB.108.184104\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> was published in the journal <em>Physical Review B<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Dynamic Compression Sector beamline at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/\">Argonne National Laboratory<\/a>, researchers applied nanosecond laser shock compression to iron at pressures up to 275 gigapascals (GPa) \u2014 more than 2 million times atmospheric pressure \u2014 and used <em>in situ<\/em> picosecond X-ray diffraction to study the structure of the iron under these extreme conditions.
