They exist as an impartial group, tasked with designing a new society with its own conception of justice.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>And \u2014 here\u2019s the kicker \u2014 what if you had to make those decisions without knowing who you would be in this new society?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"\"><p>\u201cBut the nature of man is sufficiently revealed for him to know something of himself and sufficiently veiled to leave much impenetrable darkness, a darkness in which he ever gropes, forever in vain, trying to understand himself.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Philosopher <strong>John Rawls<\/strong> asked just that in a thought experiment known as \u201cthe Veil of Ignorance\u201d in his 1971 book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0674000781\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=lifeboatfound-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0674000781&linkId=8af9415013a349e2f1497189eaaee5be\">Theory of Justice<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Behind the Veil of Ignorance, no one knows who they are.
