Though this massive ejection of plasma will only graze the magnetic bubble surrounding our planet Tuesday (Jan. 2), the magnetosphere, it could trigger a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/magnetic-storm-historic-earth-solar-flares-power-grid\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/magnetic-storm-historic-earth-solar-flares-power-grid\">geomagnetic storm<\/a> that could affect communications and power infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The coronal mass ejection <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\">CME<\/a> was hurled into space by an X-class <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\">solar flare<\/a> that burst from the surface of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\">the sun<\/a> at 4:55 p.m. EST (2155 GMT) on Sunday (Dec. 31). It is the most powerful flare that has happened on the sun during the current solar cycle, solar cycle 25, which began in Dec. 2019.
