CMFs hold promise for a wide array of applications because the pockets of air they contain make them light, strong and effective at insulating against high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>CMFs are foams that consist of hollow, metallic spheres\u2014made of materials such as <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/stainless+steel\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">stainless steel<\/a> or titanium\u2014embedded in a metallic matrix made of steel, titanium, aluminum or other metallic alloys. The resulting material is both lightweight and remarkably strong, with potential applications ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-10-composite-metal-foam-outperforms-aluminum.html\">aircraft wings<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-06-metal-foam-caliber-rounds-steel.html\">vehicle armor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2016-04-metal-foam-obliterates-bullets.html\">body armor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, CMF is better at <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2020-03-composite-metal-foams-closer-widespread.html\">insulating against high heat<\/a> than <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/conventional+metals\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">conventional metals<\/a> and alloys, such as steel.
