{"id":179109,"date":"2023-12-25T13:51:40","date_gmt":"2023-12-25T19:51:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/12\/chinas-mars-rover-detected-polygons-under-the-planets-surface"},"modified":"2023-12-25T13:51:40","modified_gmt":"2023-12-25T19:51:40","slug":"chinas-mars-rover-detected-polygons-under-the-planets-surface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/12\/chinas-mars-rover-detected-polygons-under-the-planets-surface","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Mars Rover Detected Polygons Under the Planet\u2019s Surface"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/chinas-mars-rover-detected-polygons-under-the-planets-surface2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Mars rover has uncovered underground polygon structures buried beneath the Red Planet\u2019s surface \u2014 and it looks like they\u2019re related to Mars\u2019 long-lost water, too.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-023-02117-3\" class=\"\">published in the journal <em>Nature Astronomy<\/em><\/a>, a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) say that using data from the Zhurong rover\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/ground-penetrating-radar-offers-unique-view-of-mars-subsurface\/\" class=\"\">ground-penetrating radar<\/a> capabilities, they\u2019ve found several mysterious subterranean polygons located some 35 feet below its surface that are likely formed by ice.<\/p>\n<p>Using this high-tech radar, the rover combed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia03796-utopia-planitia\" class=\"\">Utopia Planitia<\/a>, a large plain in the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/china-beautiful-new-photos-mars\" class=\"\">planet\u2019s northern hemisphere<\/a> where Zhurong\u2019s inactive husk still rests, to see what was happening below.
