Worldwide, <a target=\"_blank\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41579-022-00846-2\" delay=\"150\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41579-022-00846-2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at least 10 percent of infected people<\/a> are thought to suffer from the condition, with <a target=\"_blank\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/75-006-x\/2023001\/article\/00015-eng.htm\" delay=\"150\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/75-006-x\/2023001\/article\/00015-eng.htm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently published research<\/a> indicating higher rates <a target=\"_blank\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-023-42726-0\" delay=\"150\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-023-42726-0\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in multiple countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Incidence rates in Africa, though, are well above any of these other estimates. Why that is the case is unclear.
