{"id":177573,"date":"2023-12-07T02:23:47","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T08:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/12\/study-reveals-genes-that-set-humans-apart-from-other-primates-in-cognitive-ability"},"modified":"2023-12-07T02:23:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T08:23:47","slug":"study-reveals-genes-that-set-humans-apart-from-other-primates-in-cognitive-ability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/12\/study-reveals-genes-that-set-humans-apart-from-other-primates-in-cognitive-ability","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals genes that set humans apart from other primates in cognitive ability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/study-reveals-genes-that-set-humans-apart-from-other-primates-in-cognitive-ability2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An international team led by researchers at the University of Toronto has uncovered over 100 genes that are common to primate brains but have undergone evolutionary divergence only in humans\u2014and which could be a source of our unique cognitive ability.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers, led by Associate Professor Jesse Gillis from the Donnelly Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Research and the department of physiology at U of T\u2019s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, found the genes are expressed differently in the brains of humans compared to four of our relatives\u2014chimpanzees, gorillas, macaques and marmosets.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-023-02186-7\">Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution<\/a>, suggest that reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/selective+pressure\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">selective pressure<\/a>, or tolerance to loss-of-function mutations, may have allowed the genes to take on higher-level cognitive capacity.
