This is another step towards specific quantum mechanical control of chemical reactions, which could enable new, previously unknown reaction channels.<\/p>\n<p>The interaction of light with matter, especially with molecules, plays an important role in many areas of nature, for example in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/biological+processes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">biological processes<\/a> such as photosynthesis. Technologies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/solar+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">solar cells<\/a> use this process as well.<\/p>\n<p>On the Earth\u2019s surface, mainly light in the visible, ultraviolet or infrared regime plays a role here. Extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) light\u2014radiation with significantly more energy than <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/visible+light\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">visible light <\/a>\u2014is absorbed by the atmosphere and therefore does not reach the Earth\u2019s surface.
