The findings hold promise for future therapeutics that will improve the lives of individuals with type 2 diabetes\u2014a condition that affects more than half a billion people worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jci.org\/articles\/view\/166490\">study<\/a>, published in the <i>Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/i> on Sept. 15, demonstrated that activating a pathway to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cell+division\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cell division<\/a> not only expanded the population of insulin-producing cells, but surprisingly, it also enhanced the cells\u2019 function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s reassuring because there is a long-standing belief in the field that proliferation can lead to \u2018de-differentiation\u2019 and a loss of cell function,\u201d said study senior author Dr. Laura Alonso, chief of the division of endocrinology, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/diabetes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">diabetes<\/a> and metabolism, director of the Weill Center for Metabolic Health, and the E.
