But there was also a third path available, a nuanced, practical perspective that examines the real risks and benefits of AI.<\/p>\n<p>There have been people promoting this third perspective for years \u2014 although GPT-fueled headlines of the past 12 months have often looked past them. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/blog\/mozilla-joins-philanthropic-coalition-vice-president-harris-to-support-public-interest-ai\/\">foundations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ainowinstitute.org\/general\/ai-now-joins-civil-society-groups-in-statement-calling-for-regulation-to-protect-the-public\">think tanks<\/a>, researchers and activists (including a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/blog\/its-time-to-develop-the-tools-we-need-to-hold-algorithms-accountable\/\">Mozilla<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/time100-ai\/6308999\/abeba-birhane-ai\/\">fellows<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/time100-ai\/6309035\/pelonomi-moiloa\/\">founders<\/a>) plus the policymakers behind efforts like last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2022\/10\/04\/blueprint-for-an-ai-bill-of-rightsa-vision-for-protecting-our-civil-rights-in-the-algorithmic-age\/\">AI Blueprint for an AII Bill of Rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week was an important moment in the debate about AI, with President Biden issuing an executive order and the UK\u2019s AI Safety Summit convening world leaders.
