Currently, microchips can only pass digital information in a very limited way \u2013 from either left to right or front to back. The research was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v493\/n7434\/full\/nature11733.html\">published today, 31 January, in Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Reinoud Lavrijsen, an author on the paper from the University of Cambridge, said: \u201cToday\u2019s chips are like bungalows \u2013 everything happens on the same floor.
