Now, a team of University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison scientists has found that in patients, microtubule poisons don\u2019t actually stop <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cancer+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cancer cells<\/a> from dividing. Instead, these drugs alter mitosis\u2014sometimes enough to cause new cancer cells to die and the disease to regress.<\/p>\n<p>Cancers grow and spread because <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cancerous+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cancerous cells<\/a> divide and multiply indefinitely, unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/normal+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">normal cells<\/a> which are limited in the number of times they can split into new cells.
