{"id":174379,"date":"2023-10-19T23:00:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T04:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/brain-fungal-infection-produces-alzheimers-disease-like-changes"},"modified":"2023-10-19T23:00:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T04:00:53","slug":"brain-fungal-infection-produces-alzheimers-disease-like-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/brain-fungal-infection-produces-alzheimers-disease-like-changes","title":{"rendered":"Brain fungal infection produces Alzheimer\u2019s disease-like changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/brain-fungal-infection-produces-alzheimers-disease-like-changes.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous research has implicated fungi in chronic neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease, but there is limited understanding of how these common microbes could be involved in the development of these conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Working with animal models, researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and collaborating institutions discovered how the fungus Candida albicans enters the brain, activates two separate mechanisms in brain cells that promote its clearance, and, important for the understanding of Alzheimer\u2019s disease development, generates amyloid beta (Ab)-like peptides, toxic protein fragments from the amyloid precursor protein that are considered to be at the center of the development of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. The study appears in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-reports\/pdf\/S2211-1247(23)01252-4.pdf\"><em>Cell Reports<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lab has years of experience studying fungi, so we embarked on the study of the connection between C. albicans and Alzheimer\u2019s disease in animal models,\u201d said corresponding author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/people-search\/david-corry-19841\">Dr. David Corry<\/a>, Fulbright Endowed Chair in Pathology and professor of pathology and immunology and medicine at Baylor. He also is a member of Baylor\u2019s Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. \u201cIn 2019, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-018-07991-4\">reported<\/a> that C. albicans does get into the brain where it produces changes that are very similar to what is seen in Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
