The material stabilizing this elusive version of the valued element is a halide perovskite\u2014a class of crystalline materials that holds great promise for various applications including more-efficient solar cells, light sources, and electronics components.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, the Au<sup>2+<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/perovskite\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">perovskite<\/a> is also quick and simple to make using off-the-shelf ingredients at <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/room+temperature\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">room temperature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a real surprise that we were able to synthesize a stable material containing Au<sup>2+ <\/sup>\u2014I didn\u2019t even believe it at first,\u201d said Hemamala Karunadasa, associate professor of chemistry at the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences and senior author of the study published Aug. 28 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41557-023-01305-y?\">Nature Chemistry<\/a>. \u201cCreating this first-of-its-kind Au<sup>2+ <\/sup>perovskite is exciting. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/gold+atoms\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">gold atoms<\/a> in the perovskite bear strong similarities to the copper atoms in high-temperature superconductors, and heavy atoms with unpaired electrons, like Au<sup>2+<\/sup>, show cool magnetic effects not seen in lighter atoms.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time, Stanford researchers have found a way to create and stabilize an extremely rare form of gold that has lost two negatively charged electrons, denoted Au2+.
