According to a new job listing first spotted on Tuesday by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/26\/23889956\/microsoft-next-generation-nuclear-energy-smr-job-hiring\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>, the tech company is currently seeking a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jobs.careers.microsoft.com\/global\/en\/job\/1627555\/Principal-Program-Manager-Nuclear-Technology\">principal program manager<\/a>\u201d for nuclear technology tasked with \u201cmaturing and implementing a global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/eielson-air-force-base-alaska-small-nuclear-reactor\">Small Modular Reactor<\/a> (SMR) and microreactor energy strategy.\u201d Once established, the nuclear energy infrastructure overseen by the new hire will help power Microsoft\u2019s expansive plans for both cloud computing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/microsoft-ai-team-layoffs\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/khan-academy-ai-tutor\/\">many<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/ap-ai-news-guidelines\/\">many<\/a>, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/iowa-chatgpt-book-ban\/\"><em>many<\/em><\/a>) concerns behind AI technology\u2019s rapid proliferation is the amount of energy required to power such costly endeavors\u2014a worry exacerbated by ongoing fears pertaining to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/category\/climate-change\/\">climate collapse<\/a>.
