But it turns out muting yourself might not be as safe as you think.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Fu, a professor of electrical and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/computer+engineering\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">computer engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/computer+science\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">computer science<\/a> at Northeastern University, has figured out a way to get audio from pictures and even muted videos. Using Side Eye, a <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/machine+learning\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">machine learning<\/a> assisted tool that Fu and his research team created, Fu can determine the gender of someone speaking in the room where a photo was taken\u2014and even the exact words they spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine someone is doing a TikTok video and they mute it and dub music,\u201d Fu says. \u201cHave you ever been curious about what they\u2019re really saying? Was it \u2018Watermelon watermelon\u2019 or \u2018Here\u2019s my password?\u2019 Was somebody speaking behind them?
