The studies suggest that a single vaccine with combinations of these antigens\u2014a substance that causes the immune system to produce antibodies against it\u2014could protect against an even greater range of current and future coronaviruses.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/vaccine\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">vaccine<\/a> antigen technology, developed by the University of Cambridge and spin-out DIOSynVax in early 2020, provided protection against all known variants of SARS-CoV-2\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/virus\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">virus<\/a> that causes COVID-19\u2014as well as other major coronaviruses, including those that caused the first SARS epidemic in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The studies in mice, rabbits and guinea pigs\u2014an important step before beginning <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/human+clinical+trials\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">human clinical trials<\/a>, currently underway in Southampton and Cambridge\u2014found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/vaccine+candidate\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">vaccine candidate<\/a> provided a strong immune response against a range of coronaviruses by targeting the parts of the virus that are required for replication.
