The neuroscientists have shown that re-growing specific neurons back to their natural target regions led to recovery, while random regrowth was not effective.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2018 study published in <i>Nature,<\/i> the team <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2018-08-recipe-regenerating-nerve-fibers-spinal.html\">identified a treatment approach that triggers axons <\/a>\u2014the tiny fibers that link <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/nerve+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">nerve cells<\/a> and enable them to communicate\u2014to regrow after spinal cord <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/injury\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">injury<\/a> in rodents. But even as that approach successfully led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/regeneration\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">regeneration<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/axons\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">axons<\/a> across severe spinal cord lesions, achieving functional recovery remained a significant challenge.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, published in <i>Science<\/i>, the team aimed to determine whether directing the regeneration of axons from specific neuronal subpopulations to their natural target regions could lead to meaningful functional restoration after spinal cord injury in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/mice\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">mice<\/a>.
