{"id":171907,"date":"2023-09-13T12:23:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T17:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/the-asteroid-hit-by-nasa-seems-to-be-moving-strangely-high-school-students-find"},"modified":"2023-09-13T12:23:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T17:23:24","slug":"the-asteroid-hit-by-nasa-seems-to-be-moving-strangely-high-school-students-find","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/the-asteroid-hit-by-nasa-seems-to-be-moving-strangely-high-school-students-find","title":{"rendered":"The Asteroid Hit by NASA Seems to Be Moving Strangely, High School Students Find"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/the-asteroid-hit-by-nasa-seems-to-be-moving-strangely-high-school-students-find2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mission always had uncertainties. \u201cIf an asteroid were constructed as a monolithic rock, similar to the rocks we find on the ground, the deflection and calculations would be straightforward,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/lweb.cfa.harvard.edu\/~pveres\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Veres<\/a>, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard &amp; Smithsonian, who was not involved in the study, tells <em>Smithsonian<\/em> magazine in an email. \u201cInstead, we already knew from ground-based observations and several space missions that asteroids are often rubble piles\u2014loosely aggregated spheres of large and small boulders, dust and sometimes ice, with numerous empty spaces.\u201d Hitting one of these asteroids, Veres says, is almost more like striking a sponge than a rock, and it\u2019s harder to predict the impact\u2019s results.<\/p>\n<p>Swift\u2019s team shared their surprising new research at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in June and posted a preprint of their paper on the online server <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2308.15488.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Arxiv<\/a> in August. According to Veres, the team relied on a widely used method and gathered enough data points to conclude that Dimorphos\u2019 orbit is degrading.<\/p>\n<p>As for why this may be happening, scientists only have guesses so far. One idea is that Dimorphos was once tidally locked to Didymos\u2014meaning that, like Earth\u2019s moon, the same side of the satellite always faced its host. But now, after the DART mission, this alignment might have been broken, causing Dimorphos to tumble around as the system\u2019s tidal forces change its orbit.
