And a precedent based on a given data set is limited to the confines of the data set. This, says Microsoft, leads to \u201cincreased costs, memory, and computational overheads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AoT to the rescue. The algorithm evaluates whether the initial steps\u2014\u201d thoughts,\u201d to use a word generally associated only with humans\u2014are sound, thereby avoiding a situation where an early wrong \u201cthought\u201d snowballs into an absurd outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Though not expressly stated by Microsoft, one can imagine that if AoT is what it\u2019s cracked up to be, it might help mitigate the so-called AI \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/143064\/openai-wants-to-stop-ai-from-hallucinating-and-lying\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">hallucinations<\/a>\u201d\u2014the funny, alarming phenomenon whereby programs like ChatGPT spits out false information. In one of the more notorious examples, in May 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23826751-mata-v-avianca-airlines-affidavit-in-opposition-to-motion?responsive=1&title=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a lawyer named Stephen A. Schwartz admitted<\/a> to \u201cconsulting\u201d ChatGPT as a source when conducting research for a 10-page brief.
