CMD is a state in which a person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-found-a-new-way-to-tell-if-someone-is-truly-comatose\">appears comatose<\/a> and unresponsive while inwardly showing signs of conscious brain activity.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, reported by a team from Columbia University in the US, may help doctors more easily identify CMD in the future, and better tailor treatments for people who can understand what\u2019s being said to them but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/altered-states-consciousness-anaesthesia-sleep-like-state\">can\u2019t respond to it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CMD happens in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laneur\/article\/PIIS1474-4422(22)00212-5\/fulltext\">around 15\u201325 percent<\/a> of people with brain injuries from head trauma, brain hemorrhage, or cardiac arrest.
