It followed its programming, but without any care or respect for other beings\u2014ultimately including Cady. In a sense, as it engaged with the physical world, M3GAN became an AI sociopath.<\/p>\n<p>Sociopathic AI isn\u2019t just a topic explored in Hollywood. To Dr. Leonardo Christov-Moore at the University of Southern California and colleagues, it\u2019s high time we build artificial empathy into AI\u2014and nip any antisocial behaviors in the bud.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scirobotics.abq3658\">an essay<\/a> published last week in <em>Science Robotics,<\/em> the team argued for a <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/tag\/neuroscience\/\">neuroscience<\/a> perspective to embed empathy into lines of code. The key is to add \u201cgut instincts\u201d for survival\u2014for example, the need to avoid physical pain. With a sense of how it may be \u201churt,\u201d an AI agent could then map that knowledge onto others.
