How the bacteria coordinate their behavior to colonize the squid\u2014through cellular signaling and cues from the environment\u2014is detailed in a new study led by Penn State researchers.<\/p>\n<p>A paper describing the study is published in the journal <i>eLife<\/i>. The researchers also show that the mechanism that they describe is likely to be widespread in a broad array of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/bacteria\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">bacteria<\/a> and that understanding this coordination of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/cellular+signaling\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cellular signaling<\/a> will be important for understanding how bacteria colonize their hosts more generally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bacteria we study, known as Vibrio fischeri, is associated with many different marine hosts, but its association with the Hawaiian bobtail <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/squid\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">squid<\/a> is the best characterized,\u201d said Tim Miyashiro, associate professor of biochemistry and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/molecular+biology\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">molecular biology<\/a> in the Penn State Eberly College of Science and the leader of the research team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bioluminescent bacteria and the Hawaiian bobtail squid have formed a longstanding mutually beneficial relationship.
