Bencherif \/ Wyss Institute at Harvard University)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A new biologically inspired \u201cinjectable cryogel whole-cell cancer vaccine\u201d combines patient-specific harvested cancer cells and immune-stimulating chemicals or biological molecules to help the body attack cancer. It has been developed by scientists at <a href=\"http:\/\/wyss.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard\u2019s Wyss Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dana-Farber Cancer Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This new approach is simpler and more economical than other cancer cell transplantation therapies, which harvest tumor cells and then genetically engineer them to trigger immune responses once they are transplanted back into the patient\u2019s body, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The research, headed by Wyss Core Faculty member <a href=\"http:\/\/wyss.harvard.edu\/viewpage\/124\/david-j-mooney\" target=\"_blank\">David Mooney, Ph.D.<\/a>, was reported online in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ncomms\/2015\/150821\/ncomms9133\/full\/ncomms9133.html\" target=\"_blank\">open-access paper<\/a> in <em>Nature Communications<\/em> on August 12.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurzweilai.net\/anti-cancer-vaccine-uses-patients-own-cancer-cells-to-trigger-immune-responses\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cancerous melanoma cells, shown with their cell bodies (green) and nuclei (blue), are nestled in tiny hollow lumens (tubes) within the cryogel (red) structure.
