This biological analog to a digital camera, which the authors have named \u201cBacCam,\u201d is a crucial step for DNA data storage techniques and the merging of biological and electronic systems.<\/p>\n<p>The article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-38876-w\">A biological camera that captures and stores images directly into DNA<\/a>,\u201d was published in <em>Nature Communications<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this publication, there were two landmark papers that addressed either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nchembio.2390\">the use of cells to capture light<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature23017\">the storage of images into DNA<\/a>, but not the two together. In May 2017, researchers from the lab of Christopher Voigt, PhD, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed a system to produce \u2018color photographs\u2019 on bacterial culture plates by controlling pigment production and to redirect metabolic flux by expressing CRISPRi guide RNAs.
