Barely a week\u2019s gone by without a new algorithm, <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2023\/03\/21\/metas-new-ai-is-digging-into-the-most-mysterious-proteins-on-earth\/\">application<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2023\/06\/22\/generative-ai-could-add-4-4-trillion-a-year-to-the-global-economy-mckinsey-finds\/\">implication<\/a> making headlines. But OpenAI, the source of much of the hype, <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2023\/03\/19\/openai-says-gpt-4-is-better-in-nearly-every-way-what-matters-more-is-that-millions-will-use-it\/\">only recently completed their flagship algorithm, GPT-4<\/a>, and according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, its successor, GPT-5, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-ceo-sam-altman-the-age-of-giant-ai-models-is-already-over\/\">hasn\u2019t begun training yet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible the tempo will slow down in coming months, but don\u2019t bet on it. A new AI model as capable as GPT-4, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-deepmind-demis-hassabis-chatgpt\/\">or more so<\/a>, may drop sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p>This week, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-deepmind-demis-hassabis-chatgpt\/\">interview with<em> <\/em>Will Knight<\/a>, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said their next big model, Gemini, is currently in development, \u201ca process that will take a number of months.\u201d Hassabis said Gemini will be a mashup drawing on AI\u2019s greatest hits, most notably <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2017\/10\/23\/deepminds-new-ai-taught-itself-to-be-the-worlds-greatest-go-player\/\">DeepMind\u2019s AlphaGo<\/a>, which employed reinforcement learning to topple a champion at Go in 2016, years before experts expected the feat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent progress in AI has been startling.
