This time, they uncovered the first programmable RNA-guided system in eukaryotes. Just a few months ago, the Zhang lab <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/topics\/drug-discovery\/natures-needle-feng-zhangs-team-re-engineers-bacterial-syringes-for-programmable-protein-delivery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adapted a contractile injection system<\/a>, found naturally in bacteria, that deliver protein payloads to target human cells.<\/p>\n<p>In this recent work, Zhang\u2019s team describes how the system\u2014based on the Fanzor protein\u2014uses RNA as a guide to target DNA precisely, and that Fanzor can be reprogrammed to edit the genome of human cells.
