This combination, he says, was recognized in the very first proposal of topological quantum computing, <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/quant-ph\/9707021\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">in 1997<\/a> by the Russian-born physicist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexei_Kitaev\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Alexei Kitaev<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Kitaev realized that non-Abelian anyons could run any quantum computer algorithm.
