They can detect infrared light given off by animals, vehicles, electrical equipment and even people\u2014leading to specialized applications in a number of industries.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these applications, <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/thermal+imaging\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">thermal imaging<\/a> technology remains too expensive to be used in many <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/consumer+products\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">consumer products<\/a> such as self-driving cars or smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Our team at Flinders University has been working hard to turn this technology into something we can all use, and not just something we see in spy movies. We\u2019ve developed a low-cost thermal imaging <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/lens\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lens<\/a> that could be scaled up and brought into the lives of everyday people.
