It sounds like something from the imagination of an overly optimistic science fiction writer. But this may one day be a possibility through the emerging field of quantum biology.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few decades, scientists have made incredible progress in understanding and manipulating <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/biological+systems\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">biological systems<\/a> at increasingly small scales, from protein folding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/genetics-glossary\/Genetic-Engineering\">genetic engineering<\/a>. And yet, the extent to which <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/quantum+effects\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quantum effects<\/a> influence living systems remains barely understood.<\/p>\n<p>Quantum effects are phenomena that occur between atoms and molecules that can\u2019t be explained by <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/classical+physics\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">classical physics<\/a>. It has been known for more than a century that the rules of classical mechanics, like Newton\u2019s laws of motion, <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/book\/mono\/978-0-7503-1206-6\/chapter\/bk978-0-7503-1206-6ch1\">break down at atomic scales<\/a>.
