It wasn\u2019t until a decade and a half later that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextplatform.com\/2023\/04\/14\/climate-simulation-screams-on-the-frontier-exascale-supercomputer\/\">the 1,686 petaflops \u201cFrontier\u201d system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a> went online. This year, Argonne National Laboratory is preparing for the switch to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextplatform.com\/2022\/02\/28\/aurora-in-a-socket-what-intels-falcon-shores-xpu-might-do\/\">turned on for \u201cAurora<\/a>,\u201d which will be either the second or the third such exascale machine in the United States, depending on the timing of the \u201cEl Capitan\u201d system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>There were delays and setbacks on the road to exascale for all of these machines, as well as technology changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextplatform.com\/2022\/11\/16\/us-and-eu-pushing-ahead-with-exascale-china-efforts-remains-shrouded\/\">ongoing competition with China<\/a>, and other challenges. But don\u2019t expect the next leap to zettascale \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextplatform.com\/2023\/02\/24\/amazon-opens-up-solver-at-the-heart-of-quantum-chip-effort\/\">or even quantum computing<\/a> \u2013 to be any quicker, according to Rick Stevens, associate laboratory director of computing for environment and life sciences at Argonne.
