Auto industry experts and tech companies predicted they\u2019d be here by 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/12\/technology\/self-driving-cars-coronavirus.html\">go mainstream by 2021<\/a>. But it turns out that putting cars on the road without drivers is a far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2019\/10\/12\/driverless-cars-are-stuck-in-a-jam\">more complicated<\/a> endeavor than initially envisioned, and we\u2019re still inching very slowly towards a vision of autonomous individual transport.<\/p>\n<p>But the extended timeline hasn\u2019t discouraged researchers and engineers, who are hard at work figuring out how to make <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2022\/04\/20\/gm-just-patented-a-self-driving-car-that-teaches-people-to-drive\/\">self-driving cars<\/a> efficient, affordable, and most importantly, safe. To that end, a research team from the University of Michigan recently had a novel idea: expose driverless cars to terrible drivers.
