Utilizing multiple dimensions may simplify difficult problems\u2014not only in science fiction but also in physics\u2014and tie together conflicting theories.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Einstein\u2019s theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/general+relativity\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">general relativity <\/a>\u2014which resides in the fabric of space-time warped by planetary or other massive objects\u2014explains how gravity works in most cases. However, the theory breaks down under <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/extreme+conditions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">extreme conditions<\/a> such as those existing in black holes and cosmic primordial soups.<\/p>\n<p>An approach known as superstring theory could use another dimension to help bridge Einstein\u2019s theory with <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/quantum+mechanics\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quantum mechanics<\/a>, solving many of these problems.
