In my new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2215907120\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"\">paper<\/a> with computer scientist Melanie Mitchell, we surveyed AI researchers on the idea that large pretrained language models, like GPT-4, can understand language. When they say these models understand us, or that they don\u2019t, it\u2019s not clear that we\u2019re agreeing on our concept of understanding.
