In a tour-de-force, an international team released the full brain connectivity map of the young fruit fly, described in a paper published last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.add9330\">in <em>Science<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> Containing 3,016 neurons and 548,000 synapses, the map\u2014called a connectome\u2014is the most complex whole-brain wiring diagram to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018wow,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/news-opinion\/how-larval-fruit-fly-brains-convert-sensory-signals-to-movement-71003\">said<\/a> Dr. Shinya Yamamoto at Baylor College of Medicine, who was not involved in the work.<\/p>\n<p>Why care about a fruit fly? Far from uninvited guests at the dinner table, <em>Drosophila melanogaster<\/em> is a neuroscience darling.
