Led by University of Maryland Assistant Professor of Geology Megan Newcombe, researchers analyzed melted meteorites that had been floating around in space since the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/solar+system\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">solar system<\/a>\u2019s formation 4\u00a01\/2 billion years ago. They found that these meteorites had extremely low <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/water\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">water<\/a> content\u2014in fact, they were among the driest extraterrestrial materials ever measured.<\/p>\n<p>These results, which let researchers rule them out as the primary source of Earth\u2019s water, could have important implications for the search for water\u2014and life\u2014on other planets.
