However, until now, little was known about the relationship between the structural organization of mitochondrial networks and their functional bioenergetic activity at the level of whole tumors.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, published in <i>Nature<\/i>, researchers from the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center used <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/positron+emission+tomography\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">positron emission tomography<\/a> (PET) in combination with <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/electron+microscopy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electron microscopy<\/a> to generate 3-dimensional ultra-resolution maps of mitochondrial networks in <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/lung+tumors\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lung tumors<\/a> of genetically engineered mice.<\/p>\n<p>They categorized the tumors based on mitochondrial activity and other factors using an artificial intelligence technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/deep+learning\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">deep learning<\/a>, quantifying the mitochondrial architecture across hundreds of cells and thousands of mitochondria throughout the tumor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have long known that mitochondria play a crucial role in the metabolism and energy production of cancer cells.
