Komen Foundation, about 70%\u201380% of these individuals experience estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, where <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cancer+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cancer cells<\/a> need estrogen to grow. In terms of treatment, this presence of hormone receptors provides a nice handle for targeting tumors, say with therapies that knock out the tumor cell\u2019s ability to bind to estrogen and prevent remaining <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/breast+cancer+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">breast cancer cells<\/a> from growing.<\/p>\n<p>However, even if treated successfully, on average, one in five individuals with ER+ breast cancer experience a late recurrence when dormant <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/tumor+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">tumor cells<\/a> in distant parts of the body, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/bone+marrow\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">bone marrow<\/a>, reactivate anywhere from five to over 20 years after <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/initial+treatment\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">initial treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 270,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
