{"id":159929,"date":"2023-03-09T15:23:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T21:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/record-room-temperature-superconductor-could-boost-quantum-computer-chips"},"modified":"2023-03-09T15:23:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T21:23:46","slug":"record-room-temperature-superconductor-could-boost-quantum-computer-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/record-room-temperature-superconductor-could-boost-quantum-computer-chips","title":{"rendered":"Record room-temperature superconductor could boost quantum computer chips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/record-room-temperature-superconductor-could-boost-quantum-computer-chips.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Companies could one day make superconductive quantum computer chips that function at room temperature thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-023-05742-0\">a new material from researchers in the US<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/people\/faculty\/dias-ranga\/index.html\">Ranga Dias<\/a> from the University of Rochester and colleagues made a material superconductive at 21\u00b0C and pressures less than 1% of those used for existing high-temperature superconductors. \u2018The most exciting part is the pressure,\u2019 Dias tells <em>Chemistry World. <\/em>\u2018Even I didn\u2019t think this was possible.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unlv.edu\/news\/expert\/ashkan-salamat\">Ashkan Salamat<\/a>\u2019s team at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the scientists say that electrical resistance in their nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride falls to zero at room temperature. Making room-temperature zero-resistance materials is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistryworld.com\/holy-grails\/the-grails\/room-temperature-superconductors\">a chemistry \u2018holy grail\u2019<\/a> and could fight climate change by reducing the 5% of electricity lost as heat while flowing through the grid.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dias and Salamat\u2019s team hasn\u2019t been able to fully confirm the new material\u2019s structure. As hydrogen atoms are so small they don\u2019t easily diffract the x-rays used to work out the material\u2019s composition.
