(credit: Yasumichi Arai et al.\/EBioMedicine)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Scientists say they have cracked the secret of why some people live a healthy and physically independent life over the age of 100: keeping inflammation down and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telomere\" target=\"_blank\">telomeres<\/a> long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/ageing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle University\u2019s Institute for Ageing<\/a> in the U.K. and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.keio.ac.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keio University School of Medicine<\/a> note that severe inflammation is part of many diseases in the old, such as diabetes or diseases attacking the bones or the body\u2019s joints, and chronic inflammation can develop from any of them.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published online in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352396415300815\" target=\"_blank\">open-access paper<\/a> in <em>EBioMedicine<\/em>, a new open-access journal jointly supported by the journals <em>Cell<\/em> and <em>Lancet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurzweilai.net\/scientists-reveal-secrets-for-reaching-age-100-or-more\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leukocyte (white blood cell) telomere length in study participants up to 115 years of age.
