It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/09\/is-chatgpt-a-virus-that-has-been-released-into-the-wild\/\">attracted<\/a> major media attention and spawned countless memes on social media. It\u2019s been used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/chatgpt-launches-boom-ai-written-e-books-amazon-2023-02-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">write<\/a> hundreds of e-books in Amazon\u2019s Kindle store. And it\u2019s credited with co-authoring at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-00107-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one scientific paper.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But OpenAI, being a business \u2014 albeit a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/03\/11\/openai-shifts-from-nonprofit-to-capped-profit-to-attract-capital\/\">capped-profit one<\/a> \u2014 had to monetize ChatGPT somehow, lest investors get antsy. It took a step toward this with the launch of a premium service, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/02\/01\/openai-launches-chatgpt-plus-starting-at-20-per-month\/\">ChatGPT Plus<\/a>, in February.
