The \u201coff\u201d signal shows up as a sign change\u2014from negative to positive\u2014in data that describe \u201chigher order\u201d characteristics of the distribution of protons produced in these collisions.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, just published by RHIC\u2019s STAR Collaboration in <i>Physical Review Letters<\/i>, will help physicists map out the conditions of temperature and density under which the exotic matter, known as a quark-gluon plasma (QGP), can exist and identify key features of the phases of nuclear matter.<\/p>\n<p>Generating and studying QGP has been a central goal of research at RHIC.
