(credit: Brian Capozzi et al.\/Nature Nanotechnology)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Berkeley Lab<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia University<\/a> has created \u201cthe world\u2019s highest-performance single-molecule <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diode\" target=\"_blank\">diode<\/a>,\u201d using a combination of gold electrodes and an ionic solution.<\/p>\n<p>The diode\u2019s rectification ratio (ratio of forward to reverse current at fixed voltage) is in excess of 200, \u201ca record for single-molecule devices,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.lbl.gov\/display\/neatongroup\/Jeffrey+Neaton\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Neaton<\/a>, Director of the Molecular Foundry, a senior faculty scientist with Berkeley Lab\u2019s Materials Sciences Division and the Department of Physics at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of California Berkeley<\/a> and a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kavlifoundation.org\/university-california-berkeley\" target=\"_blank\">Kavli Energy Nanoscience Institute at Berkeley (Kavli ENSI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurzweilai.net\/a-high-performance-single-molecule-diode\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from Berkeley Lab and Columbia University have created the world\u2019s highest-performance single-molecule diode, using a combination of gold electrodes (yellow) and a \u201cTDO\u201d molecule (purple, with molecular structure on the left) in propylene carbonate, an ionic solution (light blue).
