It included a quote from Theodore von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n, a scientist and engineer who served as the first director of JPL: \u201cScientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that never has been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a recent paper published in Nature described a decline in scientific progress over the last few decades.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Some of the other new scientific institutions experimenting with shaking up the traditional structure of research include Arcadia Institute, based in the Bay Area, which is dedicated to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadiascience.com\/about\/translation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.arcadiascience.com\/about\/translation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"translational program\">translational program<\/a> that, \u201cwill provide a unique combination of funding, support, and access to accelerate new product development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexey Guzey is another leader in this space; he recognized a gap in opportunities for young scientists and initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/newscience.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/newscience.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"New Science\">New Science<\/a>, which plans to finance entire labs outside of academia, and turn \u201cthe process of doing science into an experiment itself.\u201d For a better overview of all the new types of research organizations, check out Sam Arbesman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arbesman.net\/overedge\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/arbesman.net\/overedge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"The Overedge Catalog\">The Overedge Catalog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reinhardt\u2019s vision for a private DARPA (laid out in the 278 page whitepaper) begins with the simple call to action, \u201cHow can we enable more science fiction to become reality?\u201d The document attracted the attention of investors. Today, they announced the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spec.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.spec.tech\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Speculative Technologies\">Speculative Technologies<\/a> with initial backing from Schmidt Futures, Patrick Collison, Protocol Labs, the Sloan Foundation. The board for the non-profit includes <a href=\"https:\/\/kanjun.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/kanjun.me\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Kanjun Qiu\">Kanjun Qiu<\/a>, founder of Generally Intelligent, an AI research company, and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/amarbles\/www\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/amarbles\/www\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Adam Marblestone\">Adam Marblestone<\/a>, founder and CEO of Convergent Research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Ben Reinhardt was an undergrad at Caltech, he often passed a mural painted on the back of a building on campus.
